Skype for Business

As a small business, we have been using Skype for several years and it has really helped our productivity. All of us have our own accounts so we were chuffed when they released their new version, 4.1. That chuffedness lasted for about 30 minutes before we realised just how un-business friendly it has become. As Comrade G for the Webtogs republic of Skype we have four main demands we would like to make known

1) We can no longer transfer calls, why oh why did they remove this?

2) The ability to punch a number in on the call bar at the bottom of the main window has been removed, for those comrades who make a lot of calls each day, the additional click is frustrating to bring up the dial up window.

3) File transfers are also now listed within the main IM window rather than separately. The amount of times I have closed an IM window only to terminate a file transfer is more than a little irritating

4) Conversely, a pop up for each call you get that stays there when you take a lot of calls is simply frustrating and leads to Window spam. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeese can we have the option for calls to simply appear as a tab on the main window along with conversations.

These are our main requests to enable Skype to return to being a tool of the proletariat and the minimalist, call friendly business application it was before. Vive la revolution!

Hey – I’m Skype’s blogger-in-chief. (Or should that be ‘spokesperson of the blogging committee’?) To aid you in your quest for communitarian justice, some responses:

    1) Unfortunately, we can’t do everything at once. We made a heap of changes to Skype (re-designing it from the ground up, mostly) between 3.X and 4.X, and call transfer hasn’t been included to date. Your feedback matters, though, and I’ll pass this on to the Windows team.

    2) They’re already aware of this one. I can’t make any promises about when this will be changed, though.

    3) Gotcha. I’ll pass this on.

    4) It sounds like you’re using Skype in compact view – though I may have misunderstood. Try changing the view to see if that makes a difference.

The comrades at Webtogs are more than a little touched that the revolutionary commitee of skype have decided to aid our struggle – we are more than confident now that our emancipation from feature failures will end in victory.

    Or something like that :D

Cheers for the post Peter, appreciate your feedback and taking the time to answer. In respect of your point on compact mode, new calls still pop up as a seperate window. If we could have the option to launch within a tab (say next to conversations) it would keep the window spam down a notch or too.

On a side note however, Skype still rocks, we use the Onstate application to keep Costs down and get a Virtual PBX and it's worked out very well for us.

Whoops. Clearly comment notifications don’t actually work the way I thought they might.

Glad to hear you’re fans. Your point about call windows is a valid one, and I’ll make sure the Windows team see it.
