Hi James,

Great Blog. Another recent outdoor retailer start up that I have been frequenting as a customer here in the US is: http://lifeviewoutdoors.com/store/

They serve a niche in wilderness survival preparedness and started this retail product site after shooting a video on the subject.

Your screen shots appear to have a more polished and complex set up than they have. Especially since they don't offer any sized products (e.g. clothing). They use Yahoo for their checkout system and I have always found it very straight forward to use. It may serve as a simple example to complement the high volume retailers you profile in this article.

Cheers,
Logan,
California, USA

nice effect. We've gone down the more traditional route of showing the basket page (as opposed to keeping the customer in place), but it was a hung jury in the Webtogs camp. Hope we got it right :)

Hi ben. We'd looked at this and some similar drag and drop type systems, but it gets very difficult to get this right for say a pair of walking boots. You also need to show things like lead time, delivery costs, etc, which the simple style view here doesn't do. The other big issue is your products have to have size and colour pre-selected (or you can't drop them..). This has been tried by a few people (amazon included), but they found customers were checking out stuff in the wrong size, as they hadn't been made to make the choice on size. But, still looks cool!

Panic Software's shopping basket is worth a look - http://www.panic.com/goods/ - I've no idea how it works, or if it could be scaled up beyond t-shirts, but it couldn't be simpler to use...
